Meetings of the Board of the Guiltcross Union, c 1837 - 1850 (Extracts from Minutes)

Book I;


29 Nov l837;
"Have ordered that the Schoolmaster, Schoolmistress, Porter & his wife, in future take their meals in the kitchen, instead of using the Porter's Lodge for the same".
20 Mar 1839;
Election of Relief Officers for Eastern District; "Mr. Jonathan Cunningham, proposed by Mr. James Gale, seconded by Mr. Jonathan Palmer." Elected for the Banham & Buckenham area. Also appointed Registrar for the above area on 27 Mar 1839.

Resigned in July 1841 as Relieving Officer, (p.347) (Enumerator for part of 1841 census for Banham).
[ J. Cunningham was the husband of Mary, dau. of Robert & Frances Kemp, late Hamling ].


11 Aug 1841, p.269 ;
"An application was made by the Porter to be allowed two days leave of absence this week, to visit his friends. The same was allowed & also his wife was allowed leave of absence for the same time".
22 Sep l841,p.287;
"Application from Jonathan Hutton for an increase in salary. The Board took in consideration the application of J.Hutton for an increase in salary, but refused the same.
(Jonathan & his wife had a salary of 20 pounds p.a. + 5 pounds 4 shillings p.a. for Beer, paid quarterly; in addition to board & lodging).
10 Aug 1842, p. 94 ;
"An application having been made by the Porter for an increase in salary. It was resolved that consideration of the same be gone into on the 14 day of September next".
14 Sep l842,p. Ill;
'The Board took into consideration the letter of the Porter for an increase in salary, when it was moved by Mr. John Coulson [ the Chairman ] & seconded by Mr. Charles Musket, that Five Pounds be given to the Porter as a gratuity for his past services"
30 Nov 1842 ;
"It was ordered that the Master be directed to take Robert Huggins, North Lopham, an inmate of the Workhouse, before the Magistrates for an assault upon Edward Carman, & the Porter as well as the Master".
4 Mar 1847 ;
Outdoor Relief;
"David Hutton, Kenninghall, 27, wife & 2 children; 1 Vi stone Flour, & necessaries. 2s 6d granted by Relieving Officer. 2s 6d& 2 stone flour, on account of sickness."
22 Mar 1847;

"David Hutton, Kenninghall, wife & one child ; Funeral expenses of deceased child [ Isabella, bur. 24 Mar 1847 ], & 7 pints of porter on account of sickness in addition."
[ David Hutton was given a pauper's burial on 16 May 1847 ]


30 Aug 1847, p. 11;
"Jonathan Hutton the Porter, having tendered to the board his intention of resigning the Office of Porter at the end of the current Quarter, on account of the Infirmity of himself & his wife. Resolved that such resignation be accepted, & the appointment of a successor be taken into consideration at the next meeting of the Guardians".
18 Dec 1848;
"William Frost elected Porter, with his wife as assistant to the Matron".
